Revenge of the Fred

A few posts back (Road Trippin’ to be precise – https://www.lightpaintart.com.au/blog/roadtrippin ) I shared the story about me calling all the trees Fred…I took a lot of Fred pictures on that trip…What I didn’t realise is they can move!

So Thursday night last week, I met up with a couple of visiting legends for a shoot in St Kilda.  Lots of talking, catching up and not so much photoing, but that’s all good, was lovely to see them both.  Of the shots I did take there were a few keepers, I’ll share those below.   Strictly speaking – you aren’t supposed to fly drones at night.  So really it’s my own bloody fault, but I swear that palm tree moved!  I was bringing the bird back home and slowly landing close by.   I could argue that depth perception is trickier in low light.  I could also argue that a freak gust of wind caught it and diverted the flight path.  Or I could argue that I was being cocky and thinking I was some awesome pilot dude.  The truth is of course that the palm tree moved…possibly even attacked my drone as I was peacefully bringing it into land close by.  Shocking behaviour from one of nature’s finest.  I mean this as nothing more than a warning to you all…do not trust a Fred.

Happy to say since then the drone has had new props fitted and tested, doesn’t seem to be any lasting damage.

Some Light painting!  It’s been a while, I’m slowly getting back into it.  The studio is tidy (ish) and I’ve got out there a few times lately, and as a wee bonus, I even managed to get my balls out in the park.

I signed up for an online community called 52Frames.  Concept is simple and one that you may recall that I kinda started but it fell away.  A theme is dictated by the website, and you shoot to that theme for a submission to the site that week.  It’s already proving to be a great source of inspiration and a promising community feel.  Two of those Light painting ones have been submitted. (Low Key theme was the head with minimal LP and the Ball of Light qualified for Roll of 24 - where you limit yourself to 24 clicks.

Gonna hit you with some music recommendations now.  I’ve been busy with gigs recently, 5 in the last couple of months.

The The – big in the late 80s/90s and did some comeback things in recent years.  Latest album from this year is a lot more mellow that their older stuff but to be honest any album of theirs is worth a listen.  The Palais, in St Kilda. https://open.spotify.com/album/1YssevnNU1beoPh0FGr9WU?si=2LxIWDUZTQe3sGb_OTl49g

St Vincent – Indie royalty if you ask me, Annie Clark’s albums are brilliant yet she brings a whole other dimension to her songs in a live setting.  Incredible guitarist…Reminds me of Prince. https://open.spotify.com/album/3nRlJXz5W39luXRto5hc4f?si=G-p04knWQw61BD9XvXayjA

Fink – Reasonably new to me (last couple of years) Fink has been around for about 20 years.  Every album is brilliant in it’s own right, very acoustic in a lot of ways, which was exactly how I saw him in one of Scot’s Church buildings on Collins Street.  Solo, with a guitar or two.  An incredible gig. https://open.spotify.com/album/3NLiwJYdhhF59hWVpPj9IF?si=fuicZGPbT_aqF5gkhpPydQ

Big Special – new kids to the scene these guys are from the Midlands of the UK.  Different in that the singer often speaks through the song.  Bit shouty, but can switch over quickly mid song into a great singing voice.  Poetic and clever lyrics.  Basically a two piece outfit I saw in the Corner in Richmond.  Drummer, singer and a backing track.  No encore as they explain “we’ve only got one album so we’ve no more songs to sing!” https://open.spotify.com/album/7xzVWfraTTIu3HrdGrSOPN?si=IAgr8KuTQw2wEZTbJOd0Sg

Jack White.  Legend.  Of course famous for The White Stripes but so much more that that with six cracking albums as a solo artist, the latest of which from this year is an absolute belter.  Rock, blues and just wonderful guitar work.  An absolute pleasure to see him at the Corner in Richmond too.  Sold out in minutes, I was very lucky. https://open.spotify.com/album/4j6OkbZmVIqJYDLJbiWHbX?si=_Ff6P5bcSvu4es8bSsLKgw

So ‘Tis the season of course. I’m working right up until next Friday and very much looking forward to the break.
